The University of Iceland is a research led state university, situated in the heart of Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. The University employs over 1 300 people, and has over 14 000 students of which there are more than 500 PhD students. In 2016/2017, the University of Iceland was ranked among the 201-250 of the best universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education Supplement.

Being part of the University's School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science contributes to the DEEP-EST project expertise in the fields of parallel and scalable machine learning, statistical data mining, and distributed and high-performance computing.

In the DEEP-EST project, the University of Iceland's team will provide data analytics applications on Earth Science data sets such as large hyperspectral natural and man-made land cover data and huge point clouds. Highly-parallel clustering, classification, and Deep Learning neural network (DNN) algorithms will be deployed and adapted to the DEEP-EST hardware. Expected are the capability to tackle bigger data sets and lower time-to-solution for their analysis.
