The Gaussian Elemination Squad with members Damian Alvarez (JUELICH) and Michael Ott (BADW-LRZ) of the DEEP-ER project won Intel's Parallel Universe Challenge at SC'13 in Denver, Colorado. The squad also comprised members from other German universities and compute centers: RWTH Aachen (Christian Terboven and Joachim Protze), ZIH Dresden (Michael Kluge and Guido Juckeland), TU Darmstadt (Christian Iwainsky), and Erlangen Regional Computing Center (Gerhard Wellein and Georg Hager). On their path to victory, the squad defeated the teams of China, South Korea, and the University of Illinois.
