University of Regensburg, more concrete the Department of Physics, specialises in two main areas, theoretical particle physics on one hand and theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics on the other hand. The research activities of the department are widely recognised internationally, which is reflected in three SFBs (collaborative research centres), a number of SPPs (priority programs), a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, and several other third-party funding structures. The particle physics group, involved in both DEEP and DEEP-ER, mainly focuses on Quantum Chromodynamics, in particular through numerical simulations on massively parallel computers. It also engages in the development of energy-efficient supercomputers and has played the leading role in the QPACE project (the most energy-efficient supercomputer in the world in 2009/2010 according to the Top Green 500 list) and the iDataCool project (a cluster with hot-water cooling, allowing for energy-reuse via adsorption chillers). The group has been actively collaborating with many academic institutions and several industrial partners, in particular with IBM (Böblingen) and Eurotech.

DEEP-ER, DEEP

In the framework of the DEEP-ER project, UREG was involved in the application team. Due to the nature of the research field, Lattice QCD, the researchers addressed both resiliency and I/O challenges: Resiliency issues arised for lattice QCD in the gauge-field generation phase, while I/O became important in the analysis phase.
